This episode took a slightly different format than others in the past: I caught up with my good buddy Ron Kempton – an extraordinary human being, and an exceptionally gifted songwriter and poet.

We chatted about how his career got started, how he fell in love with music, what his past students are up to now, how he came to start writing, who inspired him to write and learn guitar, what his biggest influences were and are, his feelings about Daydream Believers – and what it takes to be a true artist.

It’s a really insightful heart-to-heart that contains a tonne of golden nuggets and insights from a true artist on what it takes to be a true artist.

If you’d like to delve into Ron’s world, stop by his website

And be sure to check out his beautiful music:

The book Ron mentioned is: The Drunkard’s Walk: How Randomness Rules Our Lives by Leonard Mlodinow

On this episode, we’re joined by Greg Wilnau, founder of Musician Monster: a website which exists to remind musicians of the truth that musicians have it within themselves to become prosperous. Together with his wife, Greg also runs Wilnau Design: a web design company whose focus is designing beautiful websites that will grow your business. I was really taken aback by his sheer awesomeness when we had our very first chat back in the early spring. He’s an exceptional human being with a powerful mindset, who intentionally wants to help people. We chatted about creative ways people can make money from their art, how to overcome obstacles to achieve the life of your dreams – and how to set up a website that reflects your life’s purpose. We also talked heavily about the importance of our mindset.

During our conversation, we answered questions submitted by members of my coaching community, Daydream Believers:

1. I’m working really hard at licensing my music. I feel like sending music off to publishers is a vague way to get this done. Are there ways to get to know producers and publishers in such a way that would mean they really take an interest?

2. How do you deal with a major setback that can cause you to question everything that you are doing in a negative way? I had a huge set back in college and am finding that I have become entirely demotivated in pursuing it and rededicating myself.

3. Personal branding is a subject I feel I need to embrace along with a supporting website but feel intimidated by as I don’t know how to present myself and also don’t feel confident to make decisions on visual things like fonts/graphics/logos. So any getting started tips for that would be greatly appreciated. Plus while I have various social media accounts for my WeAreWeTogether name I’m not sure if just using my actual name would not be better for a promo site for my writing.

The branding PDF Greg referred to can be found here:“Three Ways To Brand Your Music You’ve Probably Never Heard Of”

The how to make money PDF can be found here

The book Greg recommended (and so do I!) is The Seven Habits Of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey.

Awesome Angela Mastrogiacomo, founder of Muddy Paw PR, answers questions from members of my Daydream Believers coaching community about all things PR! Muddy Paw is a tireless, thriving, spirited force with a desire to promote the people and companies they believe in. Not only that, but they aim to constantly challenge the status quo in an effort to change not just the careers of those they work with, but the industry as a whole.

  1. What made you decide to get into public relations and how did you form the relationships necessary to realise your vision?
  2. What’s the best way to build a relationship with PR people and how should I approach my first contact with them?
  3. How can a PR campaign improve reach for a startup artist?
  4. Is it better for an artist to be focused on a single platform or to be available everywhere to meet as many listeners as possible?
  5. Does the number of plays a track has influence its impact on a streaming media platform and how best should we balance this requirement against reaching more listeners/fans?
  6. In the absence of a PR budget, what can a creator, acting as his or her own PR agent, do to spread the word about their projects beyond their email list and social media contacts?
  7. I struggle to maintain a FB page, twitter page, Instagram account, etc. What’s the best way to maximize building a following with limited time and resources?
  8. How can I be more attractive to PR agents to get represented? I also struggle to manage social media entirely by myself, and would appreciate any advice on how to grow my network on Twitter in particular.
  9. How do I reach the people with big money – and how to get them to invest in you?

The article Angela mentioned about branding can be found on Soundfly. It is entitled: Don’t Be Boring: A Musician’s Guide To Branding.

This month, the amazingly inspiring Rob Lawrence took some time out to chat with me about his tips and tricks for staying motivated and inspired.

Rob is an audio producer, author, podcaster and a phenomenal coach who helps creative entrepreneurs embrace the power of sound to broadcast messages worth listening to. In short, he’s awesome. He hosts a gorgeous podcast called Inspirational Creatives which is a fountain of…inspiration!

This is Rob’s podcast. If you haven’t already subscribed to it, do so!

During this episode, Rob and I answered the questions submitted by members of my coaching community, Daydream Believers:

  1. How can I focus on projects whilst also concentrating on other things? I am a one main project kind of person but when I don’t have a main project, I try and do a couple but don’t achieve anything.
  2. What techniques can Rob suggest for compartmentalising – keeping focused on creative goals alongside daily pressures?
  3. If inspiration strikes in different ways at different times, how can I give a coherent structure to a body of work? So how to fit creative vision around inspiration if outside of that point of focus?

The website on heat mapping that Rob mentioned was Productiveflourishing.com
The book is: The One Thing by Gary Keller

I’m probably most known as a music artist – I’ve been making music since 2009 and without a shadow of a doubt, it’s one of my biggest passions in life. And hey – to those of you who have been with me since the day of my first release. THANK YOU! I have so much love and appreciation for you.

But…I also naturally seem to gravitate towards helping people. What can I say…? I love it. I seem to do it naturally. Recently, the ways that I can help people have really been coming into focus: empowering people to follow their dreams. YES!

What better way to use my experience as a creative than to empower people to pursue their own creative passions? This really is the golden nugget for me.

This led me to set up an online coaching community called Daydream Believers. It was born a little under a year ago – and it has grown into such a beautiful place.

I thought it would also be really lovely to get some of the members of the community together so they could tell you themselves about how it’s been helping them.

So we did that! We made this short little video to share the love and inspiration. A picture, as they say, tells a thousand words 🙂

All of us pulled together to make it happen.

I know so many amazing creatives who are struggling to make ends meet and this has such a detrimental impact on not just their creative output, but their overall well-being.

This is NOT how things should be. Creativity is a gift and should be celebrated.

Our unique gifts should be treasured and honed, not ridiculed and snuffed out.

We should be able to make a living from our gifts without being commoditised or exploited.

We should be able to express our creativity as it comes to us, without having to fit into a trend or an industry demand.

I want to empower people all over the world to follow their dreams because I believe that in doing so, I will do my part in making this world a better place. My big vision is to be able to empower children from troubled or underprivileged homes to follow their creative calling and live enriched and fulfilling lives.

Thank you. I love you all.

Overcoming fear – part 1

Last week I touched on where I consider fear to come from in spiritual terms: from my perspective, it is a method employed by the darker forces at play on this planet to keep us from expressing our creative gifts. Why? Because our creative expression is also the gateway to our empowerment – and I’m talking experientially when I say that!

I’ve had to overcome quite the collection of fears in order to start achieving my dream of working in music full time. There was the fear of financial lack, fear of failure, fear of judgement, fear of not being good enough, it was all fear fear fear!

I tried all sorts of tactics to overcome fear – feeling it as excitement made sense to me, but it didn’t work – all I felt was still fear. Paralysing fear. Another way to overcome fear is to do it anyway – and this appealed to me, but the fear I felt was so paralysing I literally couldn’t move beyond it.

What finally freed me from the clutches of fear was entertaining the thought that maybe, just maybe, there was something greater than me trying to manipulate my thoughts and keep me paralysed in fear, because by doing so it had my energy – and without it, it could not survive.

This belief made me become more resolute than ever to follow my dreams and I finally found the courage to put everything I had into music. And I mean everything: money, time, energy, patience, resilience, determination, dedication – all of it got thrown at music.

Once I had plucked up enough courage to do the very thing I was so fearful of doing, the fear melted away – not just in regards to my creativity, but throughout my entire life.

Of course I still feel fear because I’m a human being, but now I have the will to plough right on through it.

We must remember that the thing we are most afraid of doing – especially regarding our creativity – is often where our magic lies – or where our life’s purpose resides, so it’s really important we act in spite of our fears. And when we do, we realise there is actually nothing really there to be afraid of. It’s just an illusion of shadows.

Perhaps regarding fear as an outside force trying to manipulate your thoughts seems zany. It might be. But what I’m interested in is getting to the very bottom of the root of what causes that thought, that then triggers that emotion. And I’m talking deeper than a set of circumstances that happened to you as a child, or the result of social programming.

I found it fascinating that, simply by convincing myself that the fear was not mine so to speak, it somehow gave me the courage to overcome the fear. This therefore suggests to me that we can overcome fears simply by choosing to entertain another way of thinking – and believing in that. So my suggestion to you is to investigate new beliefs that will change your way of thinking and eventually liberate you from the bondage of fear.

If this way of thinking doesn’t resonate with you, but you struggle to overcome your fears by just doing it anyway, there is another nifty little trick you can use to overcome fear – and that’s to actually flip it on its head and use fear as motivational fuel.

Let’s say you’re a procrastinator and always find other things to do than working on your dream. So try this: set yourself a daily or weekly goal and tell a few friends about it – then tell them you’ll pay them each £100 if you don’t get it done. Give that a go and see what happens! I’ve got a few more little tricks up my sleeve to help you overcome fear – I’ll be back with more in the next coming weeks!
